Taking advantage of the release of Grand Theft Auto 5's source code on the web, several dataminers are sifting through Rockstar Games' colossal: one of the discoveries made concerns the deletion of a multiplayer mode inspired by GTA 4.
According to PCGamesN, the inactive portions of GTA 5 code tracked down by the dataminers describe a multiplayer mode that, if introduced into the already huge content offering of GTA Online, would have allowed users to try their hand at the 'old' Cops 'n' Crooks challenges from Grand Theft Auto 4.
What is Cops 'n' Crooks?
The mode in question takes up the canonical 'guards and robbers' challenges to spur players to hunt each other down by donning the shoes of cops and criminals: the latter must escort their boss to the safe house, while the law enforcers are called upon to bring the crooks to justice before they complete their objective.
According to the latest leaks and previews, this mode would have been in development since 2013, only to be shelved permanently by Rockstar in 2020.

In case you missed it: Xbox Game Pass gives away three months of Apple Music and Apple TV+!
The introduction of this mode would have allowed all fans of GTA 5 and GTA Online to immerse themselves in highly free-roaming multiplayer activities, with no limitation in the areas of Los Santos to reach (or escape from) and the tactics to be adopted to capture criminals or protect one's boss.
