Armored Core has returned after an extended sabbatical and numerous rumours. Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon was unveiled by FromSoftware during today's Game Awards presentation, with a brief video revealing that it will be released sometime in 2023.
The CG trailer shows what you expect: giant robots wheeling around and fighting one another. A burning planet and a robot with a backpack looking out over the horizon are also memorable sights.
Except for the release date, little else is known about the sequel. Fans will undoubtedly anticipate that, following the popularity of Elden Ring and other releases, FromSoftware will give this one a Soulsborne edge, but this is far from guaranteed.
After all, Armored Core is one of FromSoftware's oldest and most venerable games, dating back to 1997. It has traditionally been a multiplayer-focused mecha action game with a strong focus on customization. It last saw action in 2012, right after the release of Dark Souls.
Although FromSoftware has made its name with action RPG hits like Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Elden Ring, Armored Core was one of its first franchises.
