The Game Awards 2022 delivered a surprise: during the pre-show of the event organized by Geoff Keighley, publisher Good Sheperd Entertainment stepped in to announce Hellboy: Web of Wyrd, a new game starring the famous character created by Mike Mignola.
Hellboy: Web of Wyrd is described as a third-person rogue-lite action-adventure game with an original story created especially for the occasion with the assistance of Horse Comics and author Mike Mignola. It is currently in development at Upstream Arcade studios (a studio formed by former Lionhead people) in versions for PC, PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
What we know so far
The announcement trailer, which you can watch above, highlights a cel-shading graphical style and a visceral hand-to-hand combat system that prominently and proudly recall the source material. Set in 1982, the story sees Hellboy delve into different planes of existence throughout a series of independent yet interconnected stories with the lowest common denominator: the Butterfly House.
This mysterious mansion, from which an agent of the B.P.R.D. has never returned, is more than just a residence; it is a veritable connecting point between different realities, built twenty years before the game's events by the occultist Pasquale Deneveaux. It will be up to the red demon to investigate the disappearance of his colleague and defeat the evil that lurks within.
