We are just five days away from the premiere of one of the most anticipated series of 2023, the adaptation of The Last of Us on HBO Max.
While it is a series based on a video game, there are many doubts about the adaptation. Will it have success, or will it go along the lines of Halo? The critics have already spoken, and they believe it is an impeccable adaptation.
On Tomatazos, a site that gathers the opinion of various film critics, The Last of Us has a 100% rating. What does this mean? All reviews from all critics whose opinions are shared on the site recommend The Last of Us series.
But what are the critics saying about The Last of Us? There are several opinions, but they all agree that it is a faithful adaptation of the video game and proof that it is possible to tell gaming stories in other media. Some even call it a "great example" of how to make an adaptation work.
On the other hand, the performance of Pedro Pascal as Joel Miller and Bella Ramsey as Ellie has also earned applause. According to Evening Standard's Vicky Jessop, the leads "steal every scene they appear in" as their characters complement each other perfectly, and their relationship evolves throughout the series.

“The Last of Us is as good as we wanted, as we wanted, as we hoped. The adaptation of the Naughty Dog video game is a triumph that shows that video games can transfer well between media. Of course, two things are needed, original material with a truly worthy narrative, and creators capable of being faithful to the material and not losing the essence, but without fear and with the talent to go further", said Rafael Sáncehz Esquire's Casademont.
“…it is an impeccable adaptation of the cult video game, but also a new example of what separates HBO productions from the rest when they are made with the proper care and budget”, commented Frankie Mb from Vida Extra.
“The live-action The Last Of Us is an excellent example of how to do an adaptation work, how to retain the elements that worked while having the confidence to explore bold new paths, expand the universe, and make something that stands firm in his own two feet,” said Empire's John Nugent in his review.
