Microsoft's purchase of Activision Blizzard is official! After months of legal processes and a battle of arguments, Xbox has finally acquired the company responsible for one of the most important franchises in the video game industry: Call of Duty.
Much of the discussion and debate surrounding the acquisition of Activision Blizzard focused on the possible exclusivity of Call of Duty with Xbox ecosystems.
Jim Ryan, head of PlayStation, expressed his fear of losing the franchise on multiple occasions and even argued that Microsoft could sabotage future releases on Sony consoles.
These discussions were joined by regulatory bodies, which indicated that limiting the release of the saga on other platforms could be detrimental to the gaming industry.
Will Call of Duty disappear from PlayStation and become exclusive to Xbox?
The acquisition is official, so many fans are wondering if they will be able to enjoy these titles on their platforms. For the time being, they will.
In the constant back-and-forth that took place during the trials and meetings with international bodies, Microsoft signed agreements ensuring that, if the acquisition of Activision Blizzard is finalized, Call of Duty releases would come to multiple platforms.
It should be noted that Microsoft entered into agreements with Nvidia, Ubitus, Boosteroid, and Nintendo to bring and maintain the FPS franchise on their respective platforms for 10 years.
During the trial between Microsoft and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regarding the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, testified that he would do whatever it takes to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation.
Shortly after, in mid-July, Microsoft and Sony finally reached an agreement to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation platforms. The deal ensures that the saga will be on Sony consoles for 10 years. Of course, what could happen after that period is unknown.
However, Microsoft has made it clear that their intention is to keep Call of Duty as a multiplatform franchise, even stating that they aim for the releases to extend to the hypothetical PlayStation 7.
Naturally, many things could change by then, but for now, PlayStation, Nintendo, and other platform fans can breathe easy. Call of Duty will not be exclusive to Xbox.
But tell us, do you think the saga will be multiplatform forever? Let us know in the comments.
