After a long wait, Five Nights at Freddy's, the movie adaptation of the independent game of the same name, arrived in theaters in Latin America, the United States, and other territories. Its success is evident, and it is already poised to be one of the big productions of the year, but it experienced a significant drop in its second weekend at the box office.
Is the Hype Over? Adaptation of Five Nights at Freddy's Plummets at the Box Office
According to information from the Variety portal, the film starring Josh Hutcherson, Piper Rubio, and Matthew Lillard had a very slow second weekend at theaters in the United States, especially when compared to its successful debut.
Specifically, the project by Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions grossed $19.5 million in the United States during its second weekend in theaters. This represents a significant drop of 76% from its late October release. With these new figures, its domestic box office total stands at $113 million.
Although the nearly 80% drop may seem alarming, the reality is that the Five Nights at Freddy's movie is a commercial success. Since its theatrical release, it has grossed $103 million in the international market, bringing its global earnings to $217 million. These are very healthy numbers, especially considering it had a relatively modest budget of $20 million.
According to the report, the adaptation of the indie video game created by Scott Cawthon is already the highest-grossing horror film of the year, surpassing Scream 6 ($108 million), M3GAN ($95 million), and The Nun II ($85 million).
Five Nights at Freddy's Is a Huge Streaming Success
Although box office drops are often attributed to poor reviews, it's important to note that Five Nights at Freddy's is already available on a streaming platform in the United States. The simultaneous release impacts box office earnings, as noted by David A. Gross of the consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research.
"Five Nights at Freddy's collapsed in its second weekend of simultaneous streaming. The two viewing options compete with each other. An exclusive cinema presentation generates the highest total box office and then builds anticipation for the subsequent streaming release," stated David A. Gross.
The film directed by Emma Tammi also had an outstanding debut on Peacock, a platform where it is available in the United States. According to NBCUniversal, the horror movie is already the most-watched production on the streaming service and has broken the record set by Super Mario Bros: The Movie.
So, have you seen this adaptation? What did you think of it? Would you return to the cinema for a second viewing? Let us know in the comments.
