The day started with very bad news for anime fans and lovers of Neon Genesis Evangelion. Gainax, the studio behind the animated series of the franchise, declared bankruptcy and closed its doors, bringing an end to a 40-year history in the industry.
According to details, the Tokyo District Court recognized the studio's bankruptcy, caused by various financial crises it suffered in recent years. Gainax's copyrights were transferred to Khara, Hideaki Anno's studio, and other companies.
The Studio Behind Neon Genesis Evangelion No Longer Exists
Gainax filed for bankruptcy on May 29. The Tokyo District Court approved it, so the studio no longer exists. The company's financial troubles date back to 2012, when executives began to manage it with dubious practices that jeopardized its long-term future.
Sources indicate there was poor management, the creation of various unplanned companies, and the request for several high-cost loans. This caused several employees to resign, complicating Gainax's focus on its primary role as an animation studio. All this, in addition to several scandals, generated an enormous debt that Gainax could not repay by any means.
Gainax was founded in 1984 by creatives such as Shinji Higuchi and Hideaki Anno, who later left their positions and started various projects independently.
Over the years, Gainax has produced a series of influential and popular works that have left a lasting mark on anime culture. Besides Neon Genesis Evangelion, it is known for series like Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, Kare Kano, Oruchuban Ebichu, among many others.
Gainax was known for its innovative and experimental approach to animation. They were pioneers in using animation to explore complex and mature themes, often incorporating cultural, philosophical, and psychological references into their works.
