Commercials on current-gen consoles are nothing new. On several occasions, Xbox users have raised concerns about the appearance of ads on the interface of their systems. Despite the complaints, companies haven’t abandoned this practice, and now Sony has surprised PlayStation 5 users.

The company recently released an update for its consoles that added the Welcome Hub, a new section offering information that can also be customized with widgets and backgrounds. However, the update has faced harsh criticism on social media, as players noticed that some elements of the news feed and invasive advertising cannot be disabled.

This weekend, several PlayStation 5 users noticed a significant number of ads and commercials in the console’s interface. Supposedly, the new update would allow players to remove ads and news widgets from their home screen for a better user experience.

However, the update has not delivered on this promise, as it is currently impossible to disable the ads and other elements displaying promotions. In the background or other parts of the interface, users have seen ads related to various games, such as Final Fantasy VII Remake, Star Wars: Battlefront II, and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, among others.

What stands out is that some of the ads display outdated information. This has led players to suspect that it might be a bug that Sony will eventually fix, allowing them to disable the ads as initially promised.

On the other hand, some in the community believe the commercials are here to stay and will likely increase over time. As a result, players have voiced their discontent on social media, as they don’t want to see ads on their console interface.

At the time of writing, Sony has not addressed the situation. However, given the complaints, it is expected that the company will soon explain what happened with the recent update and the surge of ads.
