Without any basis, video games have often been accused of inciting crime and promoting violent acts. Unfortunately, authorities in one country have been swayed by this discourse and taken restrictive measures against video games without considering scientific evidence or the views of experts on the subject.

A region in Central Asia has decided to ban Grand Theft Auto and Counter-Strike, claiming they incite criminal behavior. As a result, players in the region won’t be able to enjoy the popular franchises from Rockstar Games and Valve until further notice. Clearly, this decision could impact the release of GTA VI.

The Ministry of the Interior in Tajikistan has decided to ban the GTA and Counter-Strike games, claiming they contain violent and immoral content that encourages various types of crimes. Because of this, gamers in the region won’t be able to enjoy any title in the series, and it’s likely they’ll miss out on GTA VI.

Authorities stated the ban aims to protect young people and adolescents, as they believe these games could have a negative influence on them. For this reason, they have urged parents to monitor the content their families consume, asserting that certain games promote “murder, theft, and violence.”

“Young people and adolescents who regularly play these titles fall under their negative influence and commit various crimes,” claimed the country’s authorities.

Furthermore, Tajikistan’s police will conduct raids in various gaming centers. Their goal is to ensure compliance with the ban, and to penalize those who offer or sell GTA and Counter-Strike games.

This is not the first time authorities in a country have tried to regulate or outright ban certain video games. The reality is that none of these initiatives have been supported by expert opinions or scientific evidence.

In fact, various studies have shown that video games have positive effects, such as enhancing cognitive skills, strengthening problem-solving abilities, and fostering teamwork.
