PS5 Pro: What is it? What advantages does it offer? How much does it cost? When does it release? What games will be compatible?

The console will arrive in several regions before the end of the year

After several rumors, Sony has finally confirmed what many expected: the new PlayStation 5 Pro. It is a revision of the PlayStation 5 that includes several upgrades at a price that has caught a lot of attention.

Want to know everything this new Sony console will offer? Here's everything you need to know about the PlayStation 5 Pro.

What is the PlayStation 5 Pro?

In a technical presentation, Mark Cerny, the architect of the PlayStation 5, introduced the world to a new version of the console. Its name is PlayStation 5 Pro, and it is a mid-generation upgrade designed to "advance gaming technology."

Those words sound very elegant and make us think the PlayStation 5 Pro will offer something never seen before. However, the reality is that this new console is very similar to something Sony had done before: yes, we are referring to the PlayStation 4 Pro. In other words, it’s a new model of PlayStation 5 with more power to deliver more advanced graphics.

According to Cerny, the PlayStation 5 is a console with many capabilities that have allowed creators to deliver great experiences for the current generation. When Sony talked with different developers, they noticed a desire for better graphical performance to provide a space where they could showcase dreams that require a frame rate higher than 60 frames per second.

What advantages does the PlayStation 5 Pro offer?

To meet these demands, Cerny and the entire team behind the PlayStation 5 got to work to create a new console with several key performance improvements. For starters, it has an improved GPU, with 67% more computational units than the current PlayStation 5. Additionally, its memory is 28% faster, enabling quicker rendering.

Of course, the improvements don't stop there: the PlayStation 5 Pro will also be equipped with more powerful Ray Tracing systems, allowing rays to be processed up to 3 times faster than in the current PlayStation 5. According to Sony, this will provide better dynamic reflections and more advanced light refraction.

Want more? Sony confirmed that the PlayStation 5 Pro will feature PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI system that uses machine learning technology to upscale game images. In Sony's words, this enables the delivery of "extraordinary levels of detail." This technology could also be used to improve the appearance of PlayStation VR2 games in the future, but there are no details on when or which titles will take advantage of this feature.

There’s another important change that may seem minor but will surely make many happy. So far, the standard version of the PlayStation 5 comes with 825 GB of storage space, which many find insufficient. Thus, the PlayStation 5 Pro will have 2 TB of internal memory. It’s worth noting that it’s a digital console, so you’ll need to purchase the disc drive separately.

All of this sounds great, but what does it mean for players? So far, many major games force you to choose between two options: Performance Mode or Quality Mode. This means deciding whether to play with the smoothness of 60 frames per second or prefer 4K graphics and high-level graphical fidelity with ray tracing. The goal of the PlayStation 5 Pro is to ensure that you always have the beautiful graphics created by developers without sacrificing frame rate. In short: the PlayStation 5 Pro aims to end the debate between 60 fps and 4K.

That's not all; the PlayStation 5 Pro will offer a higher level of detail in various scenes to deliver unprecedented graphics in the PlayStation ecosystem. For example, you’ll be able to see more detailed background elements, like trees, and in cinematics, features like hair and skin will look better than ever. So, when you play on this new console, you’ll experience higher-quality graphics that will leave you in awe. Of course, to fully benefit from this, you’ll need a TV with enough quality and the right features.

Which games will take advantage of the PlayStation 5 Pro?

So far, the following games have been confirmed to take advantage of the PlayStation 5 Pro’s power:

  • Horizon Forbidden West
