There’s no question that Activision Blizzard King ranks among the most valuable companies in gaming, with an impressive catalog of successful franchises. One of its most significant, not only for the company but for gaming as a whole, is Call of Duty, which has recently set a new sales record.
Back in 2016, Activision’s hit franchise had already reached 250 million games sold. In less than 10 more years, it managed to sell an additional 250 million.

Call of Duty surpassed 300 million copies sold by mid-2019, and in two more years, added 100 million to reach a total of 400 million.
This week, Microsoft’s financial report confirmed that Activision’s FPS series has sold 500 million games since its debut in 2003 (via The Washington Post).
Naturally, free-to-play downloads like Call of Duty: Mobile and Call of Duty: Warzone aren’t included in this figure.
Call of Duty surpasses Pokémon and Tetris in sales, but not Mario
This astounding sales count makes Call of Duty the second best-selling video game franchise of all time, ahead of Pokémon (480 million) and Tetris (495 million). It’s only surpassed by Mario (879.41 million), Nintendo’s juggernaut franchise that’s been successful since 1983.
Given Call of Duty’s impressive growth, it’s conceivable that it may eventually surpass Mario, especially considering that Activision’s series has been on the market 20 years less.
In case you missed it: Call of Duty has boosted Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass service.
